Convert PNG to GIF

GIF is still accepted by older software, forums and email clients that do not handle PNG transparency well. It works best for simple graphics with few colours.

About this conversion

PNG
Lossless raster format with full alpha transparency, ideal for screenshots, logos and graphics with sharp edges.
GIF
Palette-based format limited to 256 colours per frame, with on/off transparency and animation support.

Limitations and things to know

  • GIF transparency is on/off per pixel. Soft edges and semi-transparent shadows will become hard-edged.
  • GIF is limited to 256 colours, so gradients and photographs may show banding or dithering.
  • Metadata such as EXIF camera data and colour profiles may be removed or converted for privacy and compatibility.

Size, page, duration and dimension limits are shown in the converter above and checked again by our server.

PNG to GIF: common questions

Will converting PNG to GIF reduce quality?

GIF is lossless, so the pixels are stored exactly, except that colours are reduced to a 256-colour palette.

Is my PNG file checked before conversion?

Yes. We inspect the file's contents, not just its name, and the server verifies it again before converting. Renamed files that are not really PNG are rejected.

What happens to transparency?

GIF supports transparency (on/off only), so transparent areas are kept.
