Audiobooks are a wonderful way to enjoy books while doing something else, but not every book has one. Public domain classics, independent publications, course readers and your own writing often exist only as e-books. The EPUB to Audio converter reads a DRM-free EPUB aloud with a natural-sounding voice and gives you an audio file, or one file per chapter, ready for any music or podcast app. This guide explains how it works and how to produce a listening experience you will enjoy.

Why EPUB makes good audio

EPUB files are structured. They contain chapters, headings and paragraphs in a clear order, with a table of contents that names each chapter. That structure translates well into audio: the converter knows where each chapter starts, can announce chapter titles, and can create one file per chapter so you can navigate easily.

How it works

  1. The book is read. Chapters are taken in reading order from the e-book's structure, with titles from its table of contents.
  2. The text is prepared. Each chapter title is spoken first, headings are followed by a pause, and code or preformatted blocks are skipped. Images are skipped too.
  3. Text is split at sentence boundaries into pieces the voice service can speak naturally.
  4. Each piece is spoken, and the pieces are joined into a single audio file or into one file per chapter.

Options

Voice

Choose from the voices offered by the narration service. Listening to a short sample book first is a good way to choose. Some voices suit fiction, others suit non-fiction; personal taste matters most.

Speed

Slower (0.75×), normal, faster (1.25×) or fast (1.5×). Many audiobook listeners settle on normal or 1.25×.

Format

MP3 is small and plays everywhere, OGG is a good open alternative, and WAV is uncompressed for audio editing.

One file per chapter

This is the most audiobook-like option. You receive a ZIP containing files named with the chapter number and title, such as "03 - The Storm.mp3", plus a short note. Load them into any music or podcast app and they play in order.

Step by step

  1. Open the EPUB to Audio tool.
  2. Choose your EPUB. The page reads its chapters and estimates the listening time.
  3. Pick a voice, speed and format, and switch on One file per chapter for longer books.
  4. Press Convert to Audio and follow the progress as the book is narrated.
  5. Download your audio or ZIP, or play a single file directly on the result page.

How long does it take?

Narration happens much faster than real time, but long books still involve a lot of speech. A short story might finish in under a minute; a long novel can take several minutes. There is also a limit on how much text can be narrated in one conversion, roughly several hours of audio, which covers many books. The estimate shown when you upload tells you whether your book fits.

DRM-protected books

Books bought from some online stores are protected by DRM, which encrypts the content. The converter does not remove DRM and will tell you clearly if a book is protected. DRM-free books from publishers, independent authors and public domain libraries convert without any trouble.

Language

The narration voices are English. Books in other languages will be read with an English voice, which usually sounds unnatural. The converter warns you if the book's language is not English.

A worked example: a classic for the commute

A commuter downloads a DRM-free classic novel from a public domain library. She converts it to MP3 with one file per chapter at 1.25× speed and loads the ZIP into her podcast app. Each morning she listens to a chapter or two on the bus.

A worked example: proofreading your own writing

An author converts her manuscript, exported as EPUB from her writing software, into audio. Hearing her story read aloud by a neutral voice reveals clumsy sentences and repeated words she missed on screen. She notes the timestamps and fixes them in her draft.

A worked example: course readings

A lecturer converts a set of course readings, which she wrote herself and exported to EPUB, into audio so students with visual impairments or dyslexia can study alongside everyone else. Each reading becomes a set of chapter files that play on any phone.

Tips for great results

  • Use well-structured EPUBs. Books with proper chapter headings produce well-named chapter files.
  • Try a short sample first to choose your voice and speed.
  • Use one file per chapter for anything longer than an hour of listening.
  • Keep the EPUB. You can always regenerate audio with a different voice later.

Where to find DRM-free books

Plenty of excellent books are available without DRM. Public domain libraries offer thousands of classics that are free to download. Many independent authors and some publishers sell DRM-free EPUBs directly. Universities and organisations often publish open-access books. And of course, anything you write yourself and export as EPUB is yours to convert. Check the shop or library's description: it usually says whether a book is DRM-free.

Privacy

Your book is processed privately. Its text is sent securely to the text-to-speech service to create the audio and is never published. Content is not written to logs. Download links are personal and expire quickly, and your EPUB and audio are deleted automatically after a short retention period. Guest files are removed shortly after download.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert books from my e-reader store? Only DRM-free books.

Will images be described? No. Images are skipped; only the text is read.

Can I play the result in my audiobook app? Most music and podcast apps play MP3 files and ZIPs of chapter files once extracted. Some dedicated audiobook apps also accept them.

How do I pick a voice? Convert a short book or a single chapter with a few voices and choose the one you enjoy most.

In short

EPUB to Audio lets you create your own audiobook from any DRM-free e-book. Choose a voice and speed you enjoy, use one file per chapter for long books, and keep your EPUB in case you want a different voice later. It is perfect for commutes, proofreading and making reading material accessible to everyone.
